Millstream Brewing Company
Three men from Amana, Iowa decided to revive the art that had not been practiced in the Amana Colonies for years – the art of brewing beer. Carroll F. Zuber and brothers James and Dennis Roemig dreamed of building a brewery to produce small batches of hand brewed beer reminiscent of Europe’s finest. To brew the best they needed the best, so they called on one of America’s premier brewers, Joseph Pickett Sr., who helped in the brewery design, in the development of the beers, Millstream Lager and the robust, Schild Brau. Later, Millstream brewers, developed the zesty Millstream Wheat Beer.
In 1985 Millstream Brewing Co. opened its doors – the first brewery to operate in Amana since 1884. So the Millstream Brewery was born and so it has come to be recognized as the home of quality brews of rewarding taste. The Story Continues in 2000 with the sale of the brewery to Chris Priebe, Tom and Teresa Albert. Chris is naturally handy and keeps the brewery in tip-top shape. Chris also is a trained brewer from the Siebel Institute of Brewing Technology and has brought many years of brewing experience to Millstream. Teresa is an excellent people person and handles all the sales and marketing. Tom is our warehouse and production manager. He is the “glue” that binds the place together. It takes a good team to run a good brewery! These owners are committed to continually making quality brews, one batch at a time. With a current count of 33 national awards and 1 international award, Millstream speaks of some of the finest beer made in the Midwest today.
Don’t confuse our product with the mass marketed “Pilsner” beers that are on supermarket shelves. The difference is flavor, our beer is similar to that famous beer first enjoyed by the Czech people. Pilsner is simple and yet it is a beer of great finesse. It is not easy to make a beer pure enough to really let the hops stand out. Our lager yeast produces a clean fermentation, which produces a light malt taste that lets the delicate aromatic flavors of the hops shine through. We use Czech Saaz hops that are a delight to the senses and impart an arousing aroma and satisfying flavor. The end result is a crisp refreshing beer that has a pleasant hoppy aftertaste.
Schild Brau Amber
The name Schild Brau essentially means “shield Beer” in German. The Schild Brau Amber is our flagship beer crafted the same as the special beers of Munich in the Vienna Lager category . Our beer uses the same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. This beer has been with Millstream since we opened our doors in 1985. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirms why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewery at its best.
Back Road Stout
Back Road Stout used to be just a winter seasonal brew when it first was introduced back in 1996. Since then popular demand has made it into an all year affair. The ‘oatmeal’ in the name is due to the 5% oatmeal in the grist of this brew. Oats give this beer a real thick mouth feel, something definitely desirable in a stout! Black malt and roasted barley give the beer its color, and coffee-like flavors. If you like thick full-bodied & smooth stouts, this beer is for you!
(Seasonal available Nov-Jan)
Just in time for the holidays is our special treat to you, a dark, chewy bock beer. Around November you’ll find ‘chocolate bock’ on tap at the brewery. No other beer has a more pure and intense malt character as a true Bock. Many large breweries in the U.S. have diluted the original strength of this beer, but we make the real thing. The body of this beer is rich, making it a good beer to warm up to during those “special” Midwest winters. The blackened malt that we use in it gives the brew a slight hint of chocolate. It’s a smooth brew, having been lagered for over a month in our cellars.
